Fairytale cootie catcher

This is my first story cootie catcher – I hope you like it!  Enter the world of the fairytale and try to complete the story by picking the three correct options.  Get it wrong and you might send Jack to the ball or turn Rumpelstiltzkin into a beautiful swan!

To play you will need to read the words when the chooser choses their colour, and then move the cootie catcher so they can choose a number.  Again, read the words first before moving.  When they choose the second number, open up the cootie catcher to read the ending.

Have fun!

Let’s go on a treasure hunt!

Are you ready to go on a treasure hunt?  With this cootie catcher you must choose your island, find your key and open the treasure chest.  Will you find gold, or an old boot?  There are plenty of surprises in store!

This design was made up by my nine year old daughter, Lucy.  Her original didn’t scan in very well so I’ve recreated it with clip art, but the idea and concept is all hers.  We hope you like it.

Party Challenge cootie catcher

It’s been a long while since I’ve added anything new, so I thought it was time I did something I’d been thinking of for a while – a cootie catcher with a party theme.  Forfeits can be added if anyone chickens out!  Don’t forget you can create your own cootie catchers by using my PowerPoint template.  Or download this one and enjoy the party!

How to play Party Challenge

Ask the guest to choose hat, balloon, present or cake.  Spell out the word with the cootie catcher, then ask them to pick a number.  Count out the number and ask them to pick again.  Read out the first part of the challenge which is on the number, then unfold to reveal the second part of the challenge.

Thanks very much to Marcie for sending in an example of how she’s been using the blank cootie catcher template and adapting it to teach children about Passover.

Marcie says, “We used it as a craft in a Saturday morning service. It’s a great craft for the Sabbath because you’re not suppposed to cut or color. We cut them out before we went and everybody just had to fold them and play. They’re a fun way to get a discussion going about Passover, as you’ll see by the questions I wrote.”

Here’s my take on a popular cootie catcher theme – the wedding.  I’m imagining guests whiling away the time between the buffet and the first dance with these, hence the challenges inside!  You can either download a copy to print as it is, or download the Powerpoint version and personalise and edit it to your heart’s content.

Don’t forget you can create your own cootie catchers from scratch by using my blank PowerPoint template.

M. Haller Yamada designed this Lucky Item cootie catcher to use in an English as a Foreign Language Class for 11 and 12-year-olds in Japan.  He assures me that “Whatever they get, if they use it, it will bring them good luck.  At least in theory…”  Definitely worth a try, I think!

Feeling in an inventive mood?  I certainly am, because my debut picture book is coming out tomorrow and it’s all about a very inventive professor and her curious creation – the amazing oojamaflip!  Getting a children’s book published has been a lifetime ambition for me so I will be celebrating tomorrow with friends and and I thought I’d make some Professor McQuark cootie catchers for my guests to play with.  Why not download one and help me celebrate?  The illustrations are by the amazing Julia Patton – you can see more of her work on her website at juliapatton.co.ukProfessor McQuark and the Oojamaflip is published by Maverick Books and available to buy from Amazon UK and Amazon US or google to find your nearest stockist.
